Hi I’m Emily Johnston. I first started working at Soft Touch in 2015 as an apprentice. During this time I qualified with a Level 3 in Social Media and Digital Marketing for Business. I enjoy my job and I was excited when Soft Touch applied to The Rank Foundation and secured me another year-long internship through their Time to Shine Programme.
I was initially very shy and always felt like I needed approval of my work but Soft Touch gave me the foundations to build my confidence and to not doubt the work I created.
The longer I have worked here, the more confidence I have in my work as Soft Touch gives me more responsibility.
As well as my college course, I have now enrolled in my first year of a University degree course, which I never wanted to do before!
No one day is the same, you can go from working in the office doing general administration tasks, to working on a music project on a travellers’ site or learning how to make string artwork at a Thursday young people’s creative session.
Soft Touch has been changing the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable young people since 1986, giving young people a voice and helping them develop skills and achieve things that they maybe would not have achieved in mainstream education. I was one of those young people.
A few highlights of my time are: winning the Leicester Mercury Women in Business Apprentice of the Year Award in 2015; I was also able to represent Soft Touch at Buckingham Palace at a Royal Garden Party and see the Queen and Prince Phillip!
